our lovely Kianti.â He dropped his elbows to the faux-wood-grained table. âShe hates those pills with a passion and sheâs not a woman who appreciates being told what she canât do.â
âTo hell with that,â Therin growled, though he fully understood Brodyâs words. âYouâre her doctor. One she trusts enough to have travel with her.â He waved a handacross the table before laying it down. âYou tell her thereâs no wiggle room on thatâtake it or leave it.â
The rest of the guys exchanged glances before joining in on a round of soft laughter.
Khan tugged up the sleeves of his sweatshirt and cleared his throat over the remnants of his laughter. âYouâve obviously never tried to tell her what she canât do.â
Therin wasnât amused. âThis is her life weâre talkinâ about.â
âNow hold on, man.â Cube pointed a finger in Therinâs direction. âDonât mistake us. We care about Keyâs welfare more than we do our own, but when it comes to this medical stuffâ¦â He shrugged. âWe take our cues from Bro. If heâs cool with lettinâ her do this, weâve got to believe he knows sheâll come through it okay.â
âForgive me if I donât share your certainty.â Therin massaged the bridge of his nose.
âBy my calculation youâve only known her a little over a week.â Winton toyed with the rolled cuff of his sleeve. âAlready such concernâ¦â
Therinâs smile emerged slowly. His light stare was dangerously probing as he regarded Winton. âWhat does that tell you?â
Winton waited as their breakfast orders arrived. He glanced toward his colleagues then. âThat tells me youâve been charmed as totally and as easily as every other man who meets her.â
Therin smiled, looking down at his platter, but didnât dig in. âYouâre chalking my concern up to momentary fascination,â he told Winton.
âNo man is momentarily fascinated with Key,â Khan said after washing down his food with a mouthful of juice.
âShe hasnât had a serious relationship in a few yearsâ¦thatâs why,â Winton said. âEvery man who meets her realizes sheâs no momentary fascination. Unfortunately, that condition of hers rears its ugly head sooner or later and she has to choose between being happy and being alive.â
âBut dammit, thatâs not a choice she has to make,â Therin snapped.
âItâs not just about taking a pill,â Khan said. âItâs what the pills represent for her. She thinks of them as a badge of shame. Sheâs been tied to them her entire life. Sheâs a strong-willed person and to beâ¦dependent on them is probably harder on her than the illness itself.â
âChrist.â Therin pushed away his untouched plate, nodding toward Cube when he requested permission to dive in.
For the next five minutes, Therin watched them passing salt and sharing food. He studied them each closely and eventually realization dawned.
âYouâre waiting her out, arenât you?â
âIf it seems like a cop out, it is.â Brody spoke up then. âIâm not happy about it one damn bit, but to argue with her over it would aggravate things more than they already have been.â He bowed his head and massaged the area where his Afro tapered at the neck. âIt terrifies me to think about her off of her medication.â
The clatter of silverware and glasses slowly diminished as the rest of the guys stilled. Before now, none of them had heard Brody voice that particular concern.
âI told her weâd be watching her like a hawkâ¦if something happened, Iâd insist on her forgetting this foolishness and begin her regimen again. Iâm confident sheâll take them if she needs them. I have to be.â
Therin cursed and buried
