face in his hands.

“Babe, if you can believe in my existence, then you can believe that this happened,” he said in a soft voice. I shook my head, still confused.

“But he tried to kill you,” I said as if he didn’t already know that little fact. He nodded.

“Yes he did, but I also turned him,” he pointed out.

    “But not on purpose!”

    He shook his head.
“No, not on purpose,” he echoed. “But the truth remains that Nathan Hughes is no longer human because of me. And the same people who sent him out here to kill me are going to be coming after him too.” I wanted to say that I was okay with that. I mean, he did deserve it after all. “But I cannot in my right mind allow this to happen. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”

“But, Vince…” he put a finger on my lips before I could finish.

“Baby, this is a man who for the longest time has thought of werewolves as monsters and now he is the very monster he hated for so long,” he explained.

“More than anyone else here, I understand his position because he’s had to give up everything – everyone he loves. He cannot go back home, and I cannot help but feel responsible for this,” he said as he pushed a stray strand of my hair behind my ear.”

“Is that what happened to you?” I asked as I looked at him. He didn’t answer me. He just shook his head.

“That’s something I would rather not talk about,” he said softly. “But I have to help Nathan Hughes. It’s just the right thing to do, Winnie,” he said with a smile.

I shook my head. There was no way I could agree to what he was saying, at least not with a clear mind. Cursed was I for having fallen in love with the last man on earth who had a conscience. I looked at him and nodded.

“Why do you have to be so nice?” I asked in a whisper. He smiled and kissed my forehead gently.

“I wasn’t always like this, and then I met you,” he said in a soft voice. I hated that he always knew what to say to make me happy. I looked at him and shrugged.

“I don’t like this.” I said shaking my head.

“I know,” he said as he took my hand and smiled. “Come on, we need to get back in there,” he said as he looked at the door. Just before we walked into the room, Penny opened the door and looked at us.

“Hey, how is everything going?” Vincent asked.

“It’s Fran,” Penny said in a soft voice.

“Fran? What about her? What happened?” I asked.

“I don’t know whether it’s the trauma of seeing you bound and tortured or seeing the armed men there…or a combination of both…” Penny started.

“Penelope! What is wrong with my sister?” Vincent asked authoritatively.

“I think she is in shock, Vincent. I mean, she did walk right into enemy territory and everything,” Penny explained, and Vincent sighed.

“Plus, I think she might be just a little lovesick.”

Vincent raised an eyebrow at her.

“What?” Penny pushed the door open and nodded in Nathan’s direction. Vincent shook his head. “You have got to be kidding me right?” He asked surprised, and Penny shook her head.

“I have never been more serious about anything in my life,” she said.

I smiled and tried as much as I could not to smile, but it was not working. Soon enough, I burst out laughing but clasped a hand over my mouth when Vincent gave me a dirty look.

“But he tried to kill me. Just last fall, that man tried to kill me,” Vincent said.

“You told me you tried to kill your own mother when you were a boy, and last I heard, you were both on good terms,” Penny pointed out. I looked at Vincent, both shocked and utterly surprised.

“You tried to kill your mother?” I asked.

“Young werewolf…confusion…kind of what is happening with Nathan right now,” Vincent pointed out. Penny was still looking at Fran, a smile on her face.

    “Well, I must
