man to some degree, even though his morals were a tad loose for my taste. “Are we ready to head out? It’s a long fucking drive back to civilization.”
“Fuck, yes we’re ready,” Hackett shouted, clamping his hand on my shoulder. “Good to see you again, boss.”
“Thanks for taking care of Haven for me.”
    Hackett nodded and Haven blushed.
We headed out of the tiny apartment, across the recreational yard, and into the long white hallway of the prison. When we reached the front gate, my heart thudded against my chest. One more gate and the freedom I had been begging for would finally be within my grasp. With a beautiful woman and a loyal friend by my side, and the backing of the FBI, this mess that nearly robbed me of everything was about to come to a maddening end. One way or another, my long-lost brother would get what was coming to him.

Chapter Thirteen - Haven

“All stress comes from resisting what is.”

The roughly three-hour drive from deep in the pine tree jungle of Huntsville to the roaring city streets of Austin flashed by in the blink of an eye. I had slept off and on throughout the entire drive, waking up several times to find my head on Sebastian’s shoulder, with him looking at me with such longing in his eyes. My breath hitched when his hand found mine, lacing our fingers together. The heat from his touch wound through me like electricity, sparking every nerve ending in me to life in an instant.
My body was in tune with his. It fucking scared me to death, but I couldn’t resist him. That hungry predatory look in his eyes did me in every time. With that look alone, he could make me do anything he wanted, and I’d do it without question. If that wasn’t enough to make me scared, then his being a mafia boss damn sure was. However, in addition to being scared, I found the danger and protectiveness he offered to be just as enticing as the earth-shattering sex.
Was sex and danger and excitement enough to build a relationship on? Did I even want that with him? I did like him. But I was his attorney now. So the future, if there was one, wasn’t even worth thinking about right now. He could end up back in prison, which made all of these thoughts pointless. Thoughts about the future and how I felt about Sebastian would have to wait.
Sandwiched between two insanely muscular men like Sebastian and Hackett made me feel safer than I had since I signed on to help Davis Jackson fight for Sebastian’s freedom. I had never expected things to get this bad, to have people lose their lives along the way as we sought out answers. But it had happened and nothing would change that now.
Would Meg and Davis have made different choices if they knew what would happen to them? I couldn’t answer that. I’d like to think I would have made different choices. But I wanted this opportunity, needed it to make my place in the world. I let myself get involved with a man convicted of murder… and if that wasn’t bad enough, he just happened to be a wealthy mafia boss too. I could hear my mother’s voice now – “You, my girl, are a fool. That man is bad news and he’ll take you down with him. End this while you are still afloat.”
Easier said than done. He was under my skin now.
We arrived at Sebastian’s estate, nestled in the center of a sprawling multi-acre swath of land outside the city. The warm glow of interior lights shined from every window in the large two-story home, thick white columns standing all along the front like soldiers standing guard. It was gorgeous, and from what I could see, easily cost millions.
Our convoy of black SUVs filed down the driveway, parking side by side. The front of the house was well-lit and I said a silent prayer that Theron wouldn’t find it as easy to place another bomb as he had before. He had managed that in broad daylight so I didn’t think lights would scare him away. One major difference now was that security would be watching for
