âWithout it, Iâd probably just hang out in my room.â
âWhat a waste of talent that would be.â Dr. Moore smiled. âYouâll be okay, Danielle. You really will. But you and I must keep talking.â
Danielle nodded, then stood up as the doctor glanced at the clock on his desk. Her time was up. She wished she didnât have to leave. She felt safe here.
âIs your friend waiting for you outside?â the doctor asked as Danielle walked to the door.
âYes. Caroline,â Danielle told him. âWeâre going shopping.â
âAh. Spending money is very good therapy, Iâve heard,â the doctor teased.
Danielle forced a smile and said goodbye. The minute she pulled the door shut, she felt tense again.
Get a grip, she told herself. You canât hide out in Dr. Mooreâs office for the rest of your life.
âOkay, Caroline, Iâmââ Danielle stopped and looked around the waiting room. Where was Caroline?
âExcuse me,â Danielle said to Mrs. Wilkins, the receptionist. âI had a friend waiting for meâlong blond hair, jeans, and a red tank top. Did you see her?â
Mrs. Wilkins hands hovered above her computer keyboard. âI saw her come in with you. But Iâm afraid Iâve been so busy I didnât see her leave.â
Caroline probably got bored with the magazines in here, Danielle thought, pushing open the door. She must have decided to wait outside.
Danielle hurried across the small gravel parking lot to Carolineâs car. Empty.
âCaroline?â she called, glancing around. âIâm finished! We can go now!â
She heard footsteps crunching on the gravel and turned around. âCaroline?â
No.
Dee strode toward Danielle, her amber eyes blazing.
âWhat are you doing here?â Danielle asked. âWhereâs Caroline?â
Dee kept coming. âI want you out of the band, Danielle. Are you listening this time? I want you out!â
Chapter 18
THE KILLER
âW hat are you raving about now? Whereâs Caroline?â Danielle demanded.
Dee stopped. âShe had to leave.â
âLeave?â Danielle pointed to Carolineâs car. âSo whatâs this doing here? She didnât have to leave, Dee. I donât believe you. Where is she?â
âIt doesnât matter.â Dee stepped up to Danielle. âI want to talk to you.â
Great, Danielle thought bitterly. Just what I need. âI havenât got time. Besidesââ
âListen to me!â Dee snapped. âTime is exactly what you wonât haveâif you donât leave the band!â
Danielle leaned back against Carolineâs car and crossed her arms. âLook, Dee, Iâm not quitting the bandâno matter how much you want me to. Iâmsorry you arenât the only lead singer anymore. And Iâm sorry youâre jealous about Kit and me. I really am. But the doctor thinks the band is the best thing for me, andââ
âLeave it!â Dee shouted. âIâm warning youââ
Danielle straightened up, her hands clenched into fists. Rage swept through her like burning fire.
Whatâs happening to me? she wondered. IâI feel so out of control!
With a savage snarl, she dived at Dee. Her fingers curled into claws. She aimed them straight for Deeâs throat.
With an angry shriek Dee fought back. She grabbed Danielleâs hair and twisted it in her hands.
Danielle cried out in pain. She jammed one hand under Deeâs chin and shoved as hard as she could. Dee gasped. Staggered back.
Danielle leaped at her, knocking Dee to her knees.
Why? Why am I doing this? Whatâs wrong with me?
Snarling, she wrestled Dee to the ground. The gravel cut into her elbows, but the pain didnât matter. Winning did. She had to beat Dee!
Dee gasped in pain as the gravel slashed her cheek.
Blood!
Danielle could smell it! She could
