mouth drop open in surprise.
Lucky chuckled. âYouâre spinning a tall tale.â
âItâs no story.â Manny bristled. âIâm their stock handler. Mama Lou is their cook. This business is homegrown. And itâs getting bigger by the day.â
âLast year Buffalo Bill Codyâs Wild West show opened in New York and itâs a huge success. Folks want more of the Wild West,â Bob said.
âThat brings us to why we are here,â Burt added. âWe believe folks will pay hard-earned cash to see on stage the Reenactment of Temperance Tempest Chopping the Legendary Bar of the Red River Saloon. â
Tempest put a hand over her mouth to hold back her laughter at the absurd idea.
Lucky laughed out loud.
Manny appeared offended. âLaugh all you want now, but weâll laugh last when weâre rolling in dough and youâre still hunting in the mountains for gold.â
âAs much as I appreciate your suggestion,â Tempest said, âIâve hung up my hatchet.â
âWeâll buy you a new one,â Burt said.
âPaint it red. Add some sparkles,â Bob added.
Lucky laughed harder.
âMiss Tempest,â Manny said. âPlease give the notion some consideration. Your legend is growing. Once your painting hangs in the Red River Saloon, youâll be even more famous. If youâre in our Wild West show, folks will come to Delaware Bend in droves to see that artwork. Weâll all be rich and famous.â
Tempest looked from one to another as realization dawned on her that they were totally serious. âPerhaps an actress could play my part?â
âDiana might do it, but sheâs got other parts to play,â Burt said.
âDiana has agreed, as well as Mama Lou?â Tempest shook her head in wonderment.
âDonât forget me,â Manny said. âWe wouldnât sign on to no flyby-night operation. Iâve known Burt and Bob all my life.â
âYou forget Tempest has several jobs already,â Lucky said. âShe doesnât have time, even if she was interested in your show.â
âWe wouldnât think to impose on you now,â Burt said. âWeâre in the planning stages. Weâre gathering backers. Weâre soliciting talent.â
â Temperance Tempest and Her Hatchet, â Bob added. âThink about it.â
âAnd the Bend would sure appreciate your help,â Manny said.
Tempest felt her heart constrict with sadness. Now she understood. Nothing in the Bend had been free. She owed the townâs residents, and they were calling in their marker. She glanced over at Lucky, hoping she didnât appear as disillusioned as she felt.
âYou can see youâve caught Tempest by surprise,â Lucky said. âShe isnât used to being famous yet. We donât even know when weâll be back in town.â
âConsternation!â Burt shook his head. âMiss Tempest, if we sound pushy, we apologize.â
âWe donât mean to wreak havoc,â Bob agreed. âWe understand you might need time to ponder setting foot on stage. But we want you to know that our ladies will receive the utmost privacy, respect, and protection.â
âMama Lou, Diana, and Ludmila are gonna have my hide.â Manny spit a stream of tobacco to one side, and then wiped his mouth with a bandanna. âThey told me not to make you feel like you owed the town something, âcause itâs not true. Everything we done we done from our hearts. We want you to join us in this adventure âcause we like you and you fit in with us.â
Tempest smiled, feeling a little better at his words. âIs Ludmila part of this enterprise, too?â
âWho else is gonna order us what we need?â Manny asked.
âMaybe we didnât make it clear that everybody is getting paid top dollar or a percentage of the profits,â Bob added.
