for today?â Malik inquired.
âResearch, research and research,â Peyton answered, tearing open a bagel. As she lathered the cream cheese on, she knew that wasnât what he meant. âDid you have something else in mind?â Peyton bit into the bagel.
Malik grinned mischievously. âI do, but after breakfast.â
Chapter 6
P eyton stared out of the window in her office. Her mind kept replaying the images of her and Malik in bed together all weekend long. The way heâd touched her, the way heâd made her feel. She hadnât even recognized the sexual creature sheâd become with him.
âAhem.â A cough came from behind her. Peyton turned around and found Amber smiling at her. âLooks like someone was in another world.â
âI was,â Peyton admitted.
âAnyplace special?â
âWhat do you mean?â
When Amber looked Peyton straight in the eye, Peyton couldnât resist smiling broadly. âPeyton, you are glowing like a kid on Christmas morning. Did you and Malik take your relationship to the next level?â
âOkay, you caught me. Iâm busted.â Peyton couldnâtlie. âWe did. And it was fantastic!â Peyton sighed dramatically.
âSee, I told you there was nothing to worry about,â Amber replied. âIt was just like riding a bike.â
Peyton thought back to a moment when she was on top of Malik and was riding him until they both came, shattering in a million tiny pieces. âI wouldnât describe it as riding a bike, but it did all come back to me.â Peyton grinned. âAnd Iâm looking forward to another spin.â
âI bet. Itâs just really good to see you like this, Peyton. When you said you were moving here, Jude and I were concerned. But it looks like our fears were unfounded. Youâre thriving, girlfriend.â
âI think New York was just what I needed,â Peyton said. She felt as if sheâd come out of a dense fog. She hadnât felt this way in years, and it felt amazing. âMalik is a wonderful man.â
âWell, donât fall too quickly,â Amber warned. âThis is your first real relationship since David died. You need to shop around the block first. You know, see whatâs out there.â
âIâve seen whatâs out there, Amber, and itâs not all itâs cracked up to be. Whatâs your problem? I thought you liked Malik.â
âI do,â Amber replied. âBut sometimes the first man you meet isnât always the right one. Sometimes heâs the catalyst to propel you into your next relationship.â
âI donât know. Malik is pretty close to perfection,â Peyton joked.
âAll right.â Amber knew when to let a matter drop.
âCare to give me some more advice on how I can get through to one of my students?â
âAre we talking about the single mother?â
Peyton nodded. âI met with her and her boyfriend toexplain our program and how volunteering would benefit her, but it didnât go over very well. And to make matters worse, Kendra didnât show up for class today.â
âSo what are you going to do?â Amber asked, leaning against the desk.
âI thought Iâd call and check on her. You know? Make sure everythingâs all right.â Peyton had a nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach that something was wrong.
âI donât think thatâs a good idea,â Amber replied. âStudents miss class, Peyton. This isnât high school.â
âI know,â Peyton said. âBut that doesnât mean I donât care.â Many times sheâd seen her mother, Lydia Allen, make a home visit if she suspected a student was in trouble. Peyton had always admired that about her and she was following her example.
âOkay,â Amber said. âDo as you please, but if you want my advice, I say steer clear. Iâve got
